Sun’s School Case Studies

Sun builds windows and doors for a variety of buildings, but some of Sun’s biggest projects have come from buildings located on school properties, from high schools and colleges. The four projects discussed in this topic are located at the University of the South, Brescia University, Western Kentucky University, and Hume Fogg High School.

University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee

Project Description

The University of the South is a private liberal arts college located in Sewanee, Tennessee. Founded in 1857, Sewanee has many old buildings on the campus that need restoration to meet current requirements. Pictured is Quintard Hall, a dorm building located on campus that had a need for updated windows in order to meet egress requirements.  The Facilities Manager was looking for casement windows because of their energy efficiency and the ease of meeting egress requirements. The project started in the middle of March 2016 with measurements, and by April 8, shop drawings of the windows were submitted. There were over 275 units of custom width and height Operating Clad Casement windows ordered, produced, shipped, and installed by the beginning of August.

Unique Solutions and Obstacles

The project was completed in 60 days despite the lead-based paint and asbestos abatement. More obstacles faced were the 900-pound limestone rocks on the exterior of the building that divided the first and second floors and the double brick interior.  This unique construction required that the installation take place from the inside-out. The excellent coordination between the GC, Dale Incorporated (Sun’s Dealer), and Sun Windows got the project completed on time and in perfect condition in spite of the difficult obstacles that had to be overcome.

Brescia University, Owensboro, Kentucky

Project Description

Brescia University, formally known as Brescia College, is a Catholic, liberal arts institution founded in 1925. Sun has worked with Brescia for many years, installing Sun windows in the Moore Center, The Signature Building, and St. Ann Hall. The main products used were Clad Wood Casement windows with Simulated Divided Lites, and Clad Fixed Lites with Simulated Divided Lites. Sun has a very well-known relationship with Brescia due to their hometown location and reputation for good quality at a good price.

Unique Solutions and Obstacles

A unique obstacle that Sun overcame was the requested stained interior. Sun was able to provide the wanted stained interior that was requested for the windows.

Western Kentucky University, Bowling Green, Kentucky

Project Description

In 2012, Western Kentucky University was putting on a Chinese exhibit and needed certain windows to keep light from shining on the exhibit, as it may have damaged it. The project, which took sixty days, was completed right on time for the showing of the exhibit.

Unique Solutions and Obstacles

One window was made up of six different pieces with custom radius and measurements. The building was limestone, causing the installation to be tedious. Along with the customized six-piece windows, Sun devised a panel in the back of the window that adapted to the floor systems of the old building.

Hume Fogg High School, Nashville, Tennessee

Project Description

Hume Fogg high school, located in downtown Nashville, is ranked as number 77 in the National Rankings and number 2 in the Tennessee High Schools rankings. The project was done in phases, with work done at night and on weekends. The project started at the beginning of summer break of 2017 and ended around January of 2018. With the project, came paint and asbestos abatement, causing the project to take a little while longer with the large order of windows. The project took about 90 business days from the time the windows were measured to the time they were installed.

Unique Solutions and Obstacles

The blueprints for the project dated back to the early 1900s in order to get the original style of the building. The architect dictated the use of a unique glass called opaque spandrel pack glass.
